Psoriasis Nail Care

Psoriasis can cause holes, “pitting”, crumbling or lifting of finger or toenails.  To help reduce the damage:

  • Nails affected by psoriasis are vulnerable to bacterial and fungal infections so keep the nails short and smooth.
  • Avoid harsh soaps when washing your hands and feet. Dry them thoroughly – including the areas around the nails – after washing.
  • Wear gloves to protect your hands and nails during gardening, cleaning, housework, biking and weight lifting.
  • If your toenails are affected, protect them by wearing shoes during strenuous activities or while outdoors.
  • Going to the beach or the pool? Consider water shoes to protect your feet and toenails.
